I bought this book because I am a longtime fan of the late John Keegan and this was one of his few books I had not read.It is typical of Keegan,a writer who could paint the wide picture with rare clarity but also includes fine details about both famous and ordinary individuals. The Price Of Admiralty is divided into three main parts. First,The battle of Trafalgar, the legendary clash between the Royal navy and Napoleon's combined fleet of French and Spanish ships. The end result was more than the sum of its parts, leaving Britain in control of the world's oceans for more than a century to come. Second is the battle of Jutland,a steam powered dreadnaught slug fest off the coast of Denmark.Germany and Britain had been almost spoiling for a fight for decades and on 31 May 1916 they got one. Third, the epic battle of Midway between the Japan and the United States. But its about more than all that.Keegan not only had the talent to instruct us about the connections between past and present,he also puts us in touch with the people who survived to tell the tale.Like most of Keegan's books TPOA is a great read with plenty of "blood and thunder" -but his readers always come away better informed and sometimes even a little wiser.Read full review
