I bought this book, "A Thousand Splendid Suns," by Khaled Hossseini, because it was on the recommended reading list for our church women's reading program. I had enjoyed the author's previous book, "The Kite Runner," and I expected this to be as well done. It was even better! This poignant story flows smoothly; it is a real page-turner and hard to put down. The author's vivid descriptions of physical abuse and harsh living conditions may be a bit graphic for some readers, but without these scenes, the story would not be as realistic. Hosseini had captured itimate details of family life in a war-torn country, centering on the remarkable relationship between two women, who through no choice of their own, share the same abusive household.
You can't put the book down once you start reading it. You'll be lost in every word until you get to the end. It's a wonderful book with great insight very well written.

The plot is tight and realistic in a politically turbulent period of time. The characters come alive, and the story carries a humane warmth even in extrme circumstances.
