This is the fifth book in the Outlander saga. It was wonderful and drew both laughter and tears from me, but it felt very much like a transitionary (set up) part of the story as I read it. There are several threads and new storylines with some resolving and some to be continued. One part of the story that nagged me from earlier in the series was satisfyingly dealt with in this part (can't tell you or I'd spoil it). This one did have the added interest of a murder mystery. Some people aren't really gungho on transitory type books, but I am not one of them. In a series of this nature with big plot and lots of threads, it's abso-necessary. I know Ms. Gabaldon is going to deliver so I'm not worried as I know its leading to something bigger and ultimately will satisfy. As stated, this is not so much filled with the adventure of the first ones, but it is not lacking in ticklish moments (yep, held my breath a few times), great scenes with the characters, authenticism, twisted plots, tugs at your emotions (laughed and wanted to cry), etc. Great read! Onward to the next installment for me.Read full review
Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series of books are some of the greatest romance novels of our time. The Fiery Cross is just as spellbinding as the books leading up to it in this saga, and the writing is so gripping and transports the reader to that place in time. She has the ability to describe people and events in the mind's eye - the main characters are so loveable, and you can visualize the people, places, and times. There was nothing I disliked about this book - love all her books from this series, as well as The Fiery Cross. Just hoping and waiting for a TV mini series or a movie trilogy to come out. Sign me: A fan of the Outlander saga.
I can not rave enough on this book and the entire series. The characters are so real to me now I expect them to walk in the room. This is a time travel book and is full of historical facts, events from 18th century Scotland. Gabaldon is very acurate of Scottish life in this time period. this story is placed in the American colonies with the same characters from the previous books. A romantic story full of love, hate, war, highland violence and intrugue. Language is moderate. Some sex, but scenes are not overly offensive. Characters are bright and vivid. Very LONG books, but they did end too soon! I Recommend all the Outlander books by this author.
One only buys a part of a series if one is enmeshed in the series. THE OUTLANDER SERIES, by Diana Gabaldon, is one of those adventure stories that grab readers in the first book and keep us scrabbling to get the next book, and the next. My delight in this, the fifth book (beautifully conceived and written as are all the others), was only marred by the realization that it didn't end the series! There is a next one yet unpublished. I CAN'T WAIT!!! So, start with THE OUTLANDER. Part time-travel fantasy, part historical fantasy, part hot romantic thriller, it defies catagorization. But it's a hellava good read! I just hope the next one comes out soon...
The Fiery Cross is the fifth book (5th of 7) in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. The whole series is wonderful, and may be read out of order as they are each complete. I however chose to read them in order, what a wonderful tale. Each book is around a thousand pages and I can't put them down once I start. A friend loaned me the series and I found that the fifth book was missing which this is. I was loaned six books but will return seven as I had to read the whole thing. This is one of those series that I will be sorry to finish as it is my passion to read very long series and get lost in them. In this one the pages just fly by and it will be finished way too soon,
