Rarely have I enjoyed a book more than this one! It is written from the viewpoint of a fifth grader, which the author was when his story took place, in 1943, during World War II. Most of the fathers are away at war, and NAZI spies are presumed to be everywhere. In fact, the author (Howie) and his best friend (Denny) are pretty convinced that the principal of their school is a spy. They follow him and discover that it is much worse. He is planning to fire their favorite teacher, with only one week's notice. The principal won't tell the superintendant why he wants the teacher fired, or why it must be so quickly, without the usual process, but she agrees to the request anyway. This sets Howie and Denny on a mission to try to save their beloved teacher (a young lady who is "a real peach" and with whom they are both infatuated). The story has an abundance of humor and endearment, as well as some tragedy, but it is all part of the war experience. And everything seems to be explainable with the simple query, "Don't you know there's a war on?" A most excellent story!Read full review
