I purchased this for a college history course, American Material Culture. The book is short and easy to read, and provides information on how to interpret a piece of material culture. The author uses interesting information to keep the reader interested. The book was controversial at the time of its publication because the author argues that “the written word” should not be the only source that historians or researchers use to interpret an event or time period; material artifacts provide much additional information that can either support or contradict written historical accounts. If the reader is interested in history, he will find this book interesting and will likely find its argument influential in how he approaches artifacts from the past.

This is an excellent book about historic archaeology - something I knew nothing about. Historic Archaeology is more recent archaelogy that can be more specifically pinned to a time period using written records and artifiacts at the site that we now the exact dates of manufacture of - for example pottery and pipestems. Fascinating reading, although at times a bit slow reading. The book covers the United States from the time of the English invasion to more recent times. I enjoyed the new knowledge!
I haven't read the book yet but it was in great condition and one was a gift the other is for me very satisfied
