Next to Friday the 13th, part VI, this is my favorite "Jason only" film. The unrated version is the way to go, of course, with plenty of Grand Guignol gore and gruesomeness to satisfy me. Now I am huge fan of the film series, and am axiously waiting the remake due in 2009, so I am "reviewing" this movie as not only a horror flick, but also as a "Friday" film. The most diverse in its depiction of violence, ranging from quasi-cannibalism to flesh-melting, the usual creative ways killing hapless campers are more entertaining because of the sheer variety of murderous techniques. Writers Dean Lorey and Jay Huguely, with the story by Huguely and Adam Marcus, give a sort-of explanation for Jason's regenerative abilities, and this in turn provides a way to "kill" him(and pave the way for the Jason versus Freddy movie). The Vorhees family history is explored, and the movie does a pretty good job of resolving the past eight movies to a satisfying finale. So now lets talk about enjoying the movie. Kane Hodder returns as Jason (and as a morgue guard), as he is the. Best. Jason. Ever. Not just physically, but Hodder has the best presense and body language. Sadly not in FvJ, Hodders' few appearances are worthwhile. Erin Gray (!) has returned from the 23rd century to play Jason's niece, cousin, aunt,... not really sure their relationship, but they are related. As is Gray's daughter, played by the completely unremarkable Kari Keegan, and her character's baby... oh its too much to try to sum up. Sure, Gray is convincing, but it's the minor characters which set this "Friday" above the rest. Leslie Jordan and Rusty Schimmer are fantastic as Shelby and Joey. They ARE the movie in the few funny scenes scenes preceeding their equally humorous demises. The movie is worth watching once for their performances alone. If you like horror movies, this one is a keeper. Its funny, gross, gory, and rarely strays from the killings. If you like this sort of thing, this the kind of movie to watch over and over. And do a shot after each kill. If they ask me to do it again, I will, CharlieRead full review
I rate it as "good" because I know what the movie is and do not expect much from it. This is not a "film", this is just another excuse to see teenagers die in gory, gruesome ways. Which is why I love these movies - pure entertainment. So Jason is set up and he is blown into bitty pieces - one of those is his heart. Off to the morgue with Jason's bits where the heart starts beating - right there on the scale. The dr. doing the autopsy hears the heart talking to him - and the heart wants to be lunch. So doc eats the heart. Too bad for the assistant who actually went out to get lunch, because once he comes back he becomes the first victim (or is it second?). Anyway, so now Jason "lives" inside this dr. and kids think it is safe to go back to Crystal Lake since Jason is dead. Out of all the lakes, campgrounds, parks, woods etc. why would you go to a place where so many have died? Lots of girls running around half naked and lots of slashing. Then the heart keeps getting passed from victim to victim. The only one who can effectively kill Jason is a blood relative - good thing that Jason's sis, niece and grandniece all live nearby. You already know if you are a fan - this IS #9 after all! If you have not seen any of the Friday movies - start from the begining, the first 3 are the best anyways.Read full review
This movie, pardon my French, sucks @$$. It is THE worst Jason movie ever made, and always will be. I'll tell you why. JASON is only in this movie for about 5 minutes. He dies minutes into the movie and his "soul" or whatever hops from body to body for the next 80 minutes. It's horrible. Now, this being the worst of them all, does have a pretty cool looking Jason, while he is in his own body. And Jason body hopping isn't the worst part, oh no, it gets worse. There's a "Halloween" rip off plot. Jason has a relative that he has to kill for some stupid reason, and there's a magical sword/daggar thing that if used by a Voorhees can kill Jason forever, and send him to Hell. Um... okay? Now, the acting is good for what they had to work with, the music is ok, the video and audio are good, BUT, no matter how pretty you make it look, crap is still crap. Jay Huguely, Adam Marcus & Dean Lorey have written one of the biggest pieces of cinematic garbage, I have ever seen. Now, that being said, if this story was made as it's own movie and had nothing to do with Jason, it might have been good. Same goes for film farces like that of Halloween 3. The gore is plentiful and the blood flows like always, but the story is crap. The ending of the film is it's only saving grace. Jason's mask is pulled underground when the gloved hand of Freddy Kruegar comes up from Hell, thus hyping Freddy vs Jason that took another decade to even begin filming. DVD Features: Unrated & R-Rated versions, Commentary, Alternate TV Version Scenes, Jump to a Death I only recommend buying this to finish your collection, and to see the first scene and the final scene. Other than those, Jason isn't in the movie. I do not recommend this movie to casual Jason fans expecting to see Jason in a typical slaughterfest, because you don't get one. Die-hards only recommendation folks. If this review was helpful, insightful or informative, please rate it accordingly to help other eBay members see it. Check out my other reviews.
