The book is a great background to the various Napoleonic books around but also has maps that cover the period from 1789 to 1815 but also includes the Emperor’s house in St Helena in 1819. The Introduction gives the headlines and basic information that are helpful and has portraits of Ney, Blucher and Napoleon. There is a map of India in 1797 to go with Wellington's background and a Facsimile of the Waterloo Medal and Certificate and a photo of a French soldier in the 20th Century. There is then an assortment of maps including The Bastille in 1789, France 1790 and maps of the naval battles. Then there's the battlefields of various sites some good and some not so good. The Antwerp Fortifications are very good and have great detail as do the Copenhagen city plan dated September 1807. The Canadian and USA maps are interesting but not really helpful as are the European maps but it is very interesting to see maps of the period. The map of New Orleans in 1815 does not really have any detail other than a tourist map. I did like the map of Elba in 1814 but it is not like a map of today so has hills and the main port. The Waterloo Maps one by W.B. Craan in 1816 and the other by A.K Johnston show the difference in detail as do the sketches by various captains of the period. These maps and the background information are not up to the modern map maker but is a valuable look at how our ancestors looked at maps. It is well worth buying for a historical perspective and is a great read and you can spend hours looking at it. I wanted to buy a book with Napoleonic maps to cover national boundaries including battles and campaigns and I was not disappointed. I even got a bonus or two giving a total of about 92 maps which people may find interesting but not all the maps will be useful to them. Out of the 92, I found 24 very interesting and 24 the kind of information I was looking for but some were OK to look at but not that much.Read full review
