Inspector Lindley is pulled back into a murder investigation by the Metropolitan Police, whom he had left after the death of his wife, Helen and their unborn child. Thomas took his grief on a long walk; literally, he walked for several months along England's southern coast, trying in vain to live through his loss and the guilt that he feels for somehow, irrationally, causing the senseless murder of his wife. At the same time as Thomas is being pulled back into the Met, a Woman DCI is auditioning for Lindley's old job as Detective Superintendent of the murder team and she involves Lindley in her quest for permanent appointment. Everyone has dark secrets in Elizabeth George's complex mysteries and the personalities that inhabit "This Body of Death" are no different. Everyone, Thomas Lindley and Barbara Havers excluded, is in some sense pretending to be who they are not; a loving mother and secret alcoholic; some for the purposes of narcissistic self-aggrandizement and enrichment; others who have been given new identities to cover up a horrible and tragic past. This is in a long and decidedly brilliant series with Inspector Lyndley and Sergeant Havers. I have all of Elizabeth George's books and this is as I said just one in the continuing saga of what I think is one of the best British mysteries since Agatha Christie which in itself is funny as Elizabeth George is American. I can say enough good things about but I am not going to spoil it by divulging any secrets. I have all the books in the series and will keep reading until they stop coming.

First off I'm a big Barbara Havers fan, so I was very happy to find her in this novel with a significant role. Elizabeth George has introduced and reintroduced (as in this novel) other policewomen, but to me Havers is the best. I think this is a much better book than Careless In Red, and What Came Before He Shot Her. I've read Body twice.
Great read!
