This reader perused an analytical account of Saint Francis prior to reading "Francis: A Novel" by Joan Mueller. I read her book because I wanted to know more about the Saint who graces my yard in the form a concrete statue. I really liked the respect and attention to historical detail that Ms. Mueller was compelled to write and describe. After reading her novel, I felt that I saw him as more of a youthful human dealing with his lot in his familial, better said patriarchal life, than a miraculous persona compassionately embracing nature and the animals around him. Though I enjoyed the accurate historical facts, I would have equally enjoyed more description of the historical figures' faces and the edifices of the buildings, i.e., colors of stones, cracks in the facades, and equally, the hair of the rabbit and birds in details, as this is the Saint of animals. Enough said about detail. This book is good and follows an historical account. I am grateful that Ms. Mueller took the time and energy to produce something about a person that I was interested in reading about. If you are interested in Saint Francis of Assisi, it will make you want to read on, as I did while my dogs and cats sat in fellowship.Read full review
