Product Information
In this remake of the 1947 film OUT OF THE PAST, Terry Brogan (Jeff Bridges) is a handsome football player, who has been a top player for his team, the Outlaws. But after he suffers a shoulder injury, the team suddenly fires him, leaving Brogan out of a job and out of money. Nightclub owner Jake Wise (James Woods) hires Brogan to hunt down his runaway girlfriend and the $50,000 she stole from him. Out of options and with Jake holding one of Brogan's old mistakes over his head, Brogan reluctantly agrees. In beautiful Cozumel, Mexico, he not only finds the girl (Rachel Ward) but falls in love with her. However, their romance is shattered when he realizes there's a lot more to the story than Wise told him. In over his head, Brogan finds himself in a fight for the girl, his career, and his survival. Woods is creepy as the threatening Jake Wise, and ex-football star Alex Karras plays coach and ex-football star Hank Sully.
I always cry! I just turn around and watch you leave. The power in the line crumbles most people. I find my strength!. Love as hard as I can and grab happiness every moment as we never know when a love will end. Laugh, love hard and suck the life out of every moment you have with someone you love!
The movie itself is alright, but
nothing special.
It's portrayed as about man
hired to find a woman for his
rich friend.
In reality, the movie is about her, which probably won't be recognized till the very end. Her actions are what saves the day in certain circumstances.
But the way the movie was written
or cut makes it about Terry more
than her. (Perhaps the producers were sexist and reworked the film to revolve around a male lead?)
Terry has a lot of issues.
He acts misogynist at certain
parts.
The movie doesn't have a typical
happy Hollywood ending.
(Much like when watching The
Bodyguard, I was left asking "why?")
Ultimately, both Terry & Jessie are bad lead characters for a movie. She is weak and relies on family or boyfriend for finances. He cares more about his career.
Neither one of them learns or grows by the end of the movie.
The song that plays at the end (by
Phil Collins) is spectacular, and
why I wanted to see this movie. The theme really describes the movie, but yet leaves me feeling a female artist would have fit the theme better.
But, I should review the DVD features as well.
It has many special features.
Including deleted/extended scenes, with optional commentary.Read full review
Jeff Bridges wasted in a lazy remake of the classic Film Noir "Out of the Past." Bridges plays a football player for the Los Angeles Outlaws (a stand-in for the Raiders) who is cut by the team and down on his luck. He accepts a job as a would-be private eye, tracking down a friend's ex-girlfriend who has skipped town to Cozumel, Mexico, a coastal paradise on the Yucatan Peninsula. Note: I've actually been to Cozumel myself and the hotel where Bridges' character stays looks awfully similar to where my family and I stayed on our vacation there.
Bridges ends up finding his target -- and as played by Rachel Ward, she's quite a temptress (and provides plenty motivation for Bridges to risk his life in order to have her).
James Woods appears in the movie as a slimy bookie, the quintessential bad guy who gets on everybody's nerves. Swoosie Kurtz and Alex Karras (famous footballer from the Detroit Lions...featured prominently in George Plimpton's memoir Paper Lion) also appear in the film.
The director is Taylor Hackford, who has alternated over the years between trite movies like Against All Odds and The Devil's Advocate and more elevate fare like An Officer and a Gentleman. In this film, he goes through the motions and shoots a rather forgettable film from a rather forgettable screenplay.
Now, you must be asking yourself -- I thought he said "guilty pleasure," where's the pleasure here? Well, the pleasure lies in the Bridges-Ward romance and the exotic locales (how they got the OK to film a steamy/violent scene at the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, I have no idea).
Is this movie worth buying on DVD? I bought the movie online myself and I would say that the film delivers enough entertainment value to merit its selling price.
This film isn't Oscar-quality, but it's a fun few hours on the couch.Read full review
Jeff Bridges stars as NFL football player Terry Brogan, a wide receiver with a shoulder injury where his recovery is questionable. When Brogan is dropped from his current team and in need of cash, a shady L. A. nightclub owner (Jake, played by James Woods) pays Brogan big money to search for his wife, Jessie Wyler (played by Rachel Ward.) Pursuing her to Mexico, Brogan has little difficulty in tracking her down.
However, things get complicated very quickly when Brogan falls in love with Wyler and they begin a steamy affair. When Jake becomes suspicious of what is happening between Brogan and Wyler, he dispatches his henchman Hank Sully to break up the love match using any and all means. This makes things even more complicated, and Brogan begins to realize that he is in the middle of a very complicated scheme with multiple levels.
Things continue to move sideways as the plot becomes more complicated and even more opaque to the viewer. While most of the convolutions are resolved at the end, most of the suspension of disbelief of the viewer has been lost. To be intense, a thriller has to have some level of plausibility, but the complex level of corruption that involves a major land development, an NFL football team, illegal and unethical betting and several murders that seem to have been considered incidental destroys that premise. All of this causes the plausibility necessity to expire.
