One of my definite top 5 books ever. I continually hunt for copies to share with new friends and to replace the copies I have given away. Opal is a child whose eyes see the world in a beautiful, unique way. Opal's mind is open and receptive to accepting and understanding beauty and magic in the natural world around her. Her mind works on the level of adults as she uses her French, Greek and Latin. Opal's mind is not normal and she was a misunderstood being. There is/was always the question of could her childhood journal truly have been written by a child? Opal is an inspiration to all who read her beautiful prose about her animal friends. We are most fortunate to be able to share a glimpse through her words of her love and dedication to the natural world around her.
This book has a firm place in my short list of all time favorite books. A young girl keeps a journal of her impressions of the natural world around her. Reading the journal is like looking at the world through the fresh eyes of a child. It is a mystical adventure that reminds you just how wonderful the natural world really is. I buy copies just to give them to friends.
