Overall, this is a good introductory book to understanding how members of families as well as americans overall fought on opposite sides. Author presents in a clear, effective narrative how the politicians of the day, with their inflamed rethoric, caused the country to go to war against herself. Lots of nice pictures, showing how the South was so different from the North, i.e. plantations vs. factories, family scenes, repros of political posters, photos of newly enlisted soldiers, etc. Book is fairly shallow as far as offering a more comprehensive and therefore more complex analysis on the causes to go to war, but that's probably beyond the author's goal, which was to show how seemingly common folk rifted with each other to the point of taking arms against each other. And in the latter he's done a pretty good job, in my opinion. Easy to read, informative, and quite interesting. In short: for the average reader the information offered here will be plenty, for those wishing to know more it is still a very good introduction.Read full review
