Still Relevant After all These Years – when will we listen to Gore? “Earth in the Balance” published by Senator Al Gore, Jr in 1992 during his bid for the presidency, is a deeply researched and well–written analysis and explanation of the basic threats to the environment of the Earth caused by the actions of the human race in recent centuries. Focusing on global warming as the greatest single threat, along with all the ancillary economic and political problems arising from the extraction, sale, transport, and burning of fossil fuels, the book also delves into issues such as pollution and overpopulation. Gore’s detractors ridiculed the book almost 2 decades ago as alarmist and lacking in hard science to back up his assertions. Many of the same people attempt to ridicule “An Inconvenient Truth” today for many of the same reasons, but that viewpoint has gotten very hard to defend. Even President George W. Bush has finally admitted that global warming was real and that it was affected by human behaviors. It seems surprising, although it shouldn’t, that in our world today, this book is almost equally relevant now as when it was written almost 2 decades ago. This inconvenient truth is harsh and real, and re–reading the book today reveals just how deeply so many people are set against doing what we all know needs to be done. You probably aren’t reading this article unless you feel drawn to Gore’s suggestions, buy the book and read it. I wish I could say that it will make you feel good, but it won’t.Read full review
Great man and book. It truly does combine a study of ecology and the human spirit.
