I LOVE these books over novels, and this one dosen't disappoint. It is a bit slow in the beginning, with the author writing his credits and soforth, which should be at the back. This book is different, in a good way, and not a "serial killer" book. It is written around one main victum, and a whole family plus outsiders who are the perps. It is not easy to put down, and to me was disturbing and morid, but a person has to realize this was a true story. I bought this book because I am a true crime reader-fanatic. This book keeps you on the edge of your seat from getting in the psyche of the main perp, the Mom, and her brood of kids and her teen age boyfriend. It just dosen't quit! I give it an Exellent!!
This book was one you have trouble reading, but yet you can't put it down, especially knowing it's a true story..

I first became interested in this story; or true crime event, after watching a show about it, a movie about it, and the novel "The House Next Door" by Jack Ketchum. Now, although the story is twisted, horrific, and sad, the author wrote of it well, and included everything readers need, and want to know about the Indiana Torture Slaying. The author covered the actual occurrences, the arrests, and the somewhat lengthy trial. I do recommend this true crime novel to all fans!
This book went into more detail than the movie did. Living in Indiana near where this happened really caught my attention. It is an easy read book. I think I read it all in a weekend. After reading the book, I couldnt help but feel sorry for Sylvia, and wonder why people didn't say anything to to help her. My husband was suprised that something like this happened in the 60s.. I am sure that it happened more, but back then everyone stayed out of each others business. Not like it is today. Just the sure torture that this little girl went through made my jaw about hit the floor. For those of you who have seen the movie "American Crime" This book will give you more information on Sylvia's life with Gerty. This woman should of never gotten out of jail. She should of been tortured just like she did to Sylvia. Very good book.Read full review
I read this book as a teen and have been looking for it ever since. This is a true story of torture that happened in Indiana, I am an Indiana resident and was horrified at what this young girl endured. I am 50 now and this book has remained fresh in my mind for over 35 years now. Excellent book by an excellent author
