Michael Andreas Helmuth Ende November 12, 1929 - August 29, 1995 Die Unendliche Geschichte, The Neverending Story; A fantasy novel by Michael Ende, first published in Germany in 1979. First published in english, translated by Ralph Manheim, in 1983. In the English translation, the magic land is called Fantastica, though Fantasia is the translation of the original German name Phantásien. The film and television adaptations all call it Fantasia. Film Adaptations; The novel was adapted into a film by the same title in 1984, directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starring Barret Oliver as Bastian, Noah Hathaway as Atreyu, and Tami Stronach as the Childlike Empress. It was only the first half of the book, ending when Bastian enters Fantastica. Ende requested they stop production or change the movie's name, as it had drastically deviated from his novel; when they would do neither, he sued them and lost. The music for the film was composed by Klaus Doldinger. * The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter, directed by George T. Miller and starring Jonathan Brandis, was released in 1990. It used some elements from the second half of Ende's novel, but it was not the same tale. *The NeverEnding Story III, starring Jason James Richter, Melody Kay and Jack Black, was released in 1994. This film was based only upon the characters from the book, with a completely new Hollywood story. * It was also the inspiration for two television series; A 1996 cartoon about Bastian's further adventures in Fantasia, and Tales from the Neverending Story, which re-tells the whole story as a 13 episode series. The Neverending Story has also been adapted to play, ballet, and opera in Germany. The original German novel, and the early English printings, used colored fonts; red indicating events taking place in the real world, green for scenes in Fantastica, and at the end of the story where the reader is left unsure as to what world they are in, the text was printed blue. And each of the twenty-six chapters begins with a different letter of the alphabet in order, the first chapter begins with the letter A, the second with B, the next C, ect.. The inscription on the reverse of the Auryn (the snakes seal on the book)is translated Do what you wish in the English version of the book, the original German inscription Tu was du willst is the accepted translation from English of the Thelemic instruction Do what thou wilt. A very under appreciated book and author. willtrib - EasyCityBooks NOLARead full review
I love the book as much as the movie. My daughter and nieces and nephews would always ask me to read it. They loved Fantasia and learned to use their own imaginations and built their own fantasy worlds.

A treasure - the book excels the movie in so many ways. This edition has beautiful illustrations and a delightful use of colored text as a plot device.

This book is very attractive and in good condition, but for some reason it is missing four pages from page 4 to 9. The pages have not been torn out.... it looks like it may have been a printing defect.
