Yes this is James Patterson who is a wonderful author of mysteries, thrillers and forensic/cop yarns. But this book feels much more influenced by Patterson's co-author, children's book author Gabrielle Charbonnet. The book starts off with such a wonderful and mystical concept -- There are people who are assigned to be "imaginary friends" to small children who are unhappy. The only catch is that the assignment automatically terminates when the child turns 8. This is what happens with 8-year old Jane Margaux, daughter of the famous, never-aging Vivienne. The glitch and foundation for the rest of the book is that the memory of the imaginary friend is supposed to be erased from the child's mind. Even the imaginary friend does not retain all the details of his/her relationships. But in Michael and Jane's case, they are both haunted by detailed memories of their limited time together. This presumably is due to true love, even between a 30 something imaginary friend and an 8-year old girl (it helps that Michael seemingly does not age). The rest of the novel is full of romantic cliches and stereotypical characters. Vivienne, the overbearing mother with the heart of gold (at least in the end). Hugh, the handsome but shallow and social climbing boyfriend. Even Jane who is apparently too chubby to down a few Oreos before bed but manages to fit into a size 2 Givenchy for a big do in the middle of the novel, is a caricature with her intermittent attempts to stand on her own 2 feet and to finally recognize her own self-worth. The ending is no different. Won't spoil it (even though Jane herself does), but suffice to say all works out in the end in love and in the eternal scheme of things. Nothing original, but it will take the average reader only a few hours to read this faced-paced, simple book.Read full review
I am a big James Patterson fan and have been for a couple years. It seems I can't get enough. The expense of the books even at a discount store is more than my retirement can keep up with. Patterson keeps you rocking with tension and twists and constant action. If you have not tried his type of action, you might want to give him a try.
I LOVED this book! A great read that I couldn't put down. A bit different from usual but loved the mystery & time travel stuff etc. I saw the film too, which although differs from the book, I also liked a lot. I liked that it wasn't overly soppy and sentamental. I felt that the characters were completely believable. Great writing as always!
Love it! Love it! Love it! James Patterson at his best! Not only does he excel in thrillers he has completely blown me away with this novel! Impressed! James Patterson fan from way back! The man can do no wrong!!! A++++++++++++++
