The Standing Liberty quarter is an excellent addition to any numismatic collection. Its rich history in early America gives this coin a wide range of appeal, from coin collectors to valuable antique hunters alike, and many Standing Liberty quarters are worth more than their original 25 cent value. The Standing Liberty quarter was manufactured for only 14 years, from 1916 to 1930, and succeeded the Barber quarter. Three variations of these quarters were created in this period, with the exception of the year 1922, when mintage on all quarters was ceased. Type 1 was manufactured from 1916-1917, Type 2 from 1917-1924, and the third type from 1925 onwards. This Standing Liberty quarter with a mint mark of the year 1920 falls into the second type, with features on both sides of the coin having been changed from the original design. The coin features a depiction of a robed Lady Liberty standing, with the word “Liberty” arced above her head as she stands upright bearing a shield decorated with the Stars and Stripes in her left hand and holding an olive branch in her right. This Lady Liberty stands on a pedestal on which the year is printed, with the words “In God We Trust” on either side of her. The obverse depicts an American eagle in full flight and flanked by five-pointed stars and the phrase “E Pluribus Unum.” This Type 2 version of the quarter has a slightly different arrangement of stars than the original and a more modestly covered Lady Liberty. This Standing Liberty quarter from 1920 was minted at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia and has a composition of 90% silver and 10% copper. The Standing Liberty quarter remained in circulation until around 1964, when the silver coin was changed to a base metal due to public hoarding such pieces. This removal from circulation makes the Standing Liberty quarter all the more special. The Standing Liberty quarter is also slated to be re-issued in 2016 in 24-karat gold to commemorate the centennial of the original mintage in 1916. This original 1920 Standing Liberty quarter can be proudly displayed in the home or office environment for an elegant accent to impress friends, guests, or customers. When it comes to selling and buying these unique coins, whether using dealers or at an auction, the dollar amounts can range quite a bit based on the year of mint and the condition of the coin. Grading is based on multiple characteristics such as preservation, luster, color, and attractiveness, and these will have an effect on the dollar value it can be sold for. Grades are mint, about uncirculated, fine, and good. The values and prices of these coins range from highest to lowest, following the order of the grade scale. The 1920 Standing Liberty quarter is a unique and beautiful coin that will make an excellent addition to any collector’s showcase. It is an appropriate gift for serious to intermediate coin collectors or for those who simply want to own a piece of an interesting time in American history.
