"The Long Good Friday" is one of the best British gangster movies, if not from anywhere. One added bonus is that it really established Bob Hoskins as a powerful leading character. His portrayal of Harold Shands, boss of the London underworld, is equal to anything done by Bogart, De Niro, Cagney, Pesci, Edward G. Robinson, Pacino - anyone you could name. This isn’t a gentle film - it doesn’t conceal the violence of the London underworld, but it doesn’t do so gratuitously. It’s been said that George Harrison, whose company produced the movie, disapproved of the brutality, but by then it was too late. Helen Mirren plays Hoskins' wife. Far from being a typical gangster's moll, she compliments his role as boss to a degree rarely seen in this sort of movie. She’s sophisticated, highly intelligent, not to mention quite beautiful without having to resort to overt sexuality.
