Like most Cold Steel products, this is a quality blade; sharp edge and point, and nothing loose or rattling. The guard is heavy gauge and solid, making for real hand protection. It is not wall-hanger junk, and I wouldn't be afraid of it failing in an actual battle. No, it's not the quality of a custom-made blade by a master smith from the Bladesmithing Society, but then then again it's also a tenth of the price and will definitely do the job, whether reenacting or defending your home. It is an addictive blade, and you'll want to take it out and go through the moves on a regular basis and make you dream of sea battles. Just some notes: The black finish on the blade is rubbing off quickly, but that's not an issue for me since I like a bright blade anyway. This is NOT a sword for someone without good wrist and grip strength, and probably not ideal for the average woman or the smaller man; it is a heavy chopper with a smooth handle, and many if not most people would probably want to add a thong for security, because nobody wants a 3 pound 2' razor with a needle point flying off randomly should it slip out of your hand. The handle is large enough to fit any sized hand, even when using the saber grip (which I would hesitate to do with this because of its weight and blade-heavy balance), and even though I have big hands, I still have plenty of room, maybe too much. I intend to fix that by adding a string wrap complete with Turks head knot stops to keep it where I want it, in addition to the retention thong.Read full review

Cold Steel has named this sword a Hybrid 1917 Cutlass. The name is a misnomer but more accurate than their 1917 Cutlass which is actually a Dutch Klewang. I know because I have one. It would be best if Cold Steel would stick to the original design of swords. This sword is of good fighting quality but could stand some improvements. The hilt has been made ambidextrous but there is an extension at the top which prevents raising the sword to shoulder arms... should one want to use the weapon in parades. Also, the perforations in the guard are a comical distraction from the original 1917. Grips and finish are fine, but the blood groove is much smaller than the originals or the Klewang for that matter. The Craftsmen of India have done a fine job with the plans they were given. Now give them some actual vintage patterns and see what they can do. Read full review

Well built for the price. Weight is a little more distributed towards the blade, but it handles well and is of high quality. Would buy again

Low price, arrived on time, had an edge, 15 minutes later has a very good edge. Scabbard is solid. Definitely worth what I paid.
