I first heard of Tom Zoellner, the author, from his other book, "An Ordinary Man." After reading a little about him on the book jacket, I decided to check out other books written by him. "The Heartless Stone" reviews the history of diamonds and how the whole engagement ring phenomenon began. I cannot believe the industry decided that Japan should pay more for an engagement ring! And they fell for it! This book revealed a whole new world to me about how diamonds are mined, the people in places like Africa that die for a stupid rock, and the poor Indian childre/adults that breathe in diamond dust while working on that ring that ends up in Penney's, Kohl's or Wal-Mart. It is mind-boggling. I wasn't a big fan of large diamonds anyway, but this just makes you think about all those brides out there buying a stone that someone had to suffer for. Just because Sierra Leone isn't in a war doesn't mean that there aren't ramifications of the diamond trade in Africa. It destroys the earth, there are people that risk their lives diving through murky waters with questionable equipment to look for a stone. I know many people won't read this because they don't want to know. Maybe that's why Blood Diamond didn't do as well in theatres. I really enjoyed reading this book because it shows his view and what he endored to get to where his ex-fiancee's diamond came from. I highly recommend this book as well as "An Ordinary Man."Read full review
