A entertaining action-packed fantasy, beginning in 1944 when the mad monk Rasputin--in cahoots with occult-buff Hitler and his Nazi thugs--opens a transdimensional portal through which a baby demon emerges, capable of destroying the world with his powers. Instead, the aptly named Hellboy is raised by the benevolent Prof. Bloom, founder of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, whose allied forces enlist the adult Hellboy (Ron Perlman, perfectly cast) to battle evil at every turn. While nursing a melancholy love for the comely firestarter Liz. Hellboy files his demonic horns and wreaks havoc on the bad guys. The action is occasionally routine, Hellboy a pop-culture original. He's red as a lobster, puffs stogies like Groucho Marx, and fights the good fight with a kind but troubled heart. What's not to like? Good Movie!Read full review
I might not be the best person to review Hellboy because I'm not a hardcore comic book fan (or any kind of comic book fan for that matter). So if you are a Hellboy enthusiast - or simply a comic enthusiast - take what I say with a grain of salt... that said, I do like these theatrical remakes of the comics - Sin City is a favorite of mine if you've read my reviews. So now that my prefacing is out of the way - this is my blunt review of the movie: Hellboy is a visually stunning and overly satisfying film that looks superb on any great television... My praise ends there because the list of no-name actors are not appealing or talented and the storyline drags a little bit. I've heard rave reviews about Hellboy from critics, comic fans, non-comic fans alike - and I've heard really negative reviews as well. I fall in between - the movie is worth a watch purely for the asthetics - but thats really about it. I couldnt get into the story and was rather frustrated by the acting and plot. But you decide and then write a review because I'd love to read it!Read full review
Based on the comic book series by Mike Mignola, Guillermo del Toro's gleefully eccentric film follows the supernatural adventures of Hellboy (Ron Perlman), a cigar-chomping, horn-filing demonic hero enlisted by an occult scholar (John Hurt) to fight evil in the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. Along with the fire-throwing Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) and the amphibious psychic Abe Sapien (Doug Jones, with the voice of David Hyde Pierce), Hellboy is joined by new recruit John Myers (Rupert Evans), a squeaky-clean FBI agent assigned to keep the big red devil's exploits in check. Things get out of hand, however, when a vicious monster is unleashed by the villainous Rasputin (Karl Roden), leading to events that may set off an apocalyptic nightmare for humanity. Echoing Peter Jackson's passion for THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, HELLBOY is a labor of love from del Toro, a longtime fan of the comic and its creator. The director's enthusiasm shows, since HELLBOY is a wondrously strange slice of pulpy adventure, mixed with horror and humor, and enhanced by stunning visual effects. In the title role (and lots of red makeup), Perlman is pitch-perfect, giving the good-natured misfit a powerful--yet surprisingly sensitive--presence. Blair, Evans, Hurt, and other actors are similarly well cast, rounding out an ensemble intent on retaining the movie's dark yet superbly entertaining tone.Read full review
This is a very dark movie in the comic book character series. For small kids it may be too dark, violent, and scary. My family loves the movie, especially Abe. We want more Abe. Ron Pearlman is a very good Hellboy. Humor is thrown into the movie very well at times. The graphics and effects are good but not great. The characters and storyline carry the movie. Religious folk may not like the biblical references and symbolism. The end of the movie is very well done. Anyone that likes movies in the comic genre will love this one.
Mike Mignola's acclaimed comic book series about a creature from Hades who joins the battle against evil arrives on the screen in vivid form in this adaptation directed by distinctive horror filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. During World War II, the Third Reich has joined forces with the evil Grigori Rasputin (Karel Roden), who has used his occult powers to summon up a young demon from the depth of Hell to be used as the ultimate Axis weapon. However, the demonic creature is captured by American forces, and put in the care of Professor Broom (John Hurt), the founder of a top-secret organization called the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense. Under Broom's tutelage, the creature develops empathy and a desire to do good while his physical powers and paranormal talents are honed to a fine point. Sixty years later, the demon, now known as Hellboy (Ron Perlman), is part of an elite secret defense team alongside Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), a beautiful young woman who can create fire with her mind, and Abe Sapian (Doug Jones), an aquatic humanoid with the power of telepathy. Despite his many years of fighting for right, Hellboy finds himself facing his greatest challenge when the powerful Rasputin returns, determined to bring the demon back to the forces of darkness so that evil may finally rule the world. Hellboy's supporting cast also includes Jeffrey Tambor, Rupert Evans, and Brian Steele. ~ Mark Deming, RoviRead full review
