I am a very competitive chess player, and the looks of a chess set matter greatly to me. This chess set is B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L! The wood grain on the board is stunning, and the pieces are sized very nicely to the size of the board squares. Therefore, the set does NOT feel aggravatingly "scrunched up" like so many other chess sets do. It is large - more like a piece of fine furniture than just a game board. I only wish that there were no letters and numbers on the edges of the board; it slightly detracts from the classy looks of this set. The pieces are weighted appropriately, and nicely felted. They do not fall over easily. The pieces are somewhat simpler than I would have preferred (accurately shown in the pictures,) particularly the knights, but the board is so pretty that is doesn't really matter. The pieces look really good on the board. People who have walked by the set can't help but say, "Wow, nice set!" The pictures do not show that inside the folding board there are two mating plastic inserts that are slightly felted with molded hollows for each individual chess piece. That part is made of flimsy plastic, but is still very functional, as the inserts can be carefully lifted out and delicately replaced - probably a limited number of times before the plastic will need repair, but still very nice to have as I like to transport my chess sets a lot. The board folds open into position precisely for play, and closes precisely. The clasps that hold it in the folded position are pretty, functional and precise. Nice workmanship! Overall, I would buy this set at the same price again in a heartbeat.Read full review
