Engelbreit fans, this one’s for you! 100 simple, yet sophisticated recipes in a lavishly illustrated hardbound book. Big, colorful, and Mary’s artwork throughout, can inspire you to a wonderful menu and meal. I love how the full-color photos make liberal use of vintage dishes, glassware, and tablecloths. This is just what you expect from Mary Engelbreit. It’s entertaining, as well as informative. Pages lay open fairly well. This is about 12 inches by twelve inches, so it’s a tad difficult to use in the kitchen. What I have done lately is taken the recipes I am actually making, and photocopying them, to protect my valuable cookbook investments. I can do it easily at home. This book’s publisher’s suggested price is $24.95. The recipes do have a lot of ingredients, and the cooking steps may be a bit complicated for beginners. All are easily found in any major grocery, and the recipes have suggested menus to choose a go-with from. That helps to making shopping easier. I can give you a simple bit of Mary Engelbreit right here, a fast and easy dish of fresh country goodness. Confetti Coleslaw serves 4 30 minutes prep time ½ cup sour cream 2 t. cider vinegar 1 ½ cups finely shredded red cabbage 1 cup finely shredded green cabbage ½ cup grated carrots ¾ cup thinly sliced bell peppers ( the more colors, the better) 2 T fresh snipped chives salt and freshly ground pepper 1. In a small bowl, combine the sour cream and vinegar. 2. In a large bowl, combine the red and green cabbages, the carrots, bell peppers, and chives. Add the sour cream mixture and toss until well mixed. Season with salt and pepper, transfer to a nice bowl, and serve. Isn’t that a nice alternative to the nasty old stuff in your market’s deli case? And you get to tell your guests that Mary Engelbreit helped you make it. Well worth the praise you’ll get! The perfect way to use the bounty from your summer’s Victory garden.Read full review
