Another SUPERB courtroom drama by Lescroart (pronounced 'Les-quaw'). I loved it!!! Lescroart, DeMille, and Meltzer are my favorite authors because they always give you more than just a mystery thriller. The Abe Glitsky/Dismas Hardy duo become embroiled in another crime-of-the-century battle after the arson-murder of a prominent San Franciscan and his mystery-fiance. The Mayor, dissatisfied with the results of the investigation, involves Glitsky, an ex-homicide cop--now Deputy Chief of Investigators--in the battle for the truth, and the daughter-in-law of the victim hires Diz, an ex-District Attorney, to find the perpetrator of the murder after the current investigator becomes convinced that she is the arsonist-murderer. As the story evolves, Diz finds that his client, the daughter-in-law, is an old college sweetheart, who is still carrying the flame for him after all these years. He uncovers witnesses who say they saw her moments before and after the deadly fire, plenty of motive and chance, no alibi, and one lie after another. Abe and Diz tangle with Dan Cuneo, the current investigating officer, as he makes one mistake after another, and ignores important clues about the murder. All-in-all, this is a very entertaining novel, and keeps you on-the-fence as to who the murderer is all the way through the book to the end. Absolutely courtroom drama at its best--a must-read for those who like a little extra with their murder mysteries.Read full review
