I always enjoy reading Michael Crichton. This one is all about genetic engineering and I learned a lot, although at times I felt like my head would explode because there is a lot to understand about the subject and the way it is being manipulating by (surprise!) the politicians and the universities as much or more so than corporate America. There were a lot of characters and subplots and that made it difficult for me to follow. They do tie together in the end, so patience is warranted. I would have done better to read this in one sitting or over just a day or two, but circumstances prevented that. I think that made it just a bit harder to track all the players. I recommend the book. You will learn a lot about an important topic.
Michael Crichton is a great author. A signed book is extra special. Book in great condition. Very pleased.

“Prey” was to me; such an engrossing and truly scary read I just knew that “Next” would be the same thought provoking page-turner. Being led into the dark and twisted moral wilderness of geneticists and biotech research by Mr. Crichton is truly enlightening as it is frightening. The legal angle was just as perplexing; do we own our own cells, fluids, tissues or DNA? Who has a right to them? How do we know what our doctors or labs do with our samples they take or "discards" as they are sometimes called. Should we be able to profit if our cells can cure an illness? And what is next? His books are always so NOW and dead on regarding divided opinions of the controversial issues of the day. I enjoy the way he writes about a fictional story “so close to the future of a reality.” His stories are so easy to slip into and get lost in a scientific realm of very unsettling not so fiction. I always hope it is truly all fiction and Mr. Crichton does not have inside information that is masquerading as fiction to alert us. OK, I realize that was a bit paranoid but; “This novel is fiction, except for the parts that aren’t,” Mr. Crichton writes. We also have so many others yelling warnings and others telling us to ignore the warnings and the nuts shouting them, Mr. Crichton’s warnings just happen to be entertaining in the process. I agree with K. St Clair, “If you are looking for thrills, look elsewhere, but if you want a thought-provoking and throughly entertaining science-not-quite-fiction book, then don’t be deterred!” By thrills, I mean car chasing, gun shootouts, explosions and such; this book offers a scarier and different kind of thrill, real life. (Except for the parts that aren’t) After 3 friends finish it I will read it again. Then maybe put on e-bay.Read full review

Next is a little bit far out, but it is an easy read. Like other Crichton book, there is fact mixed in with a healthy dose of outrageous fiction. The story is a bit frightening, but also very funny. In involves genetic engineering run amok. This is a great beach book!
