"American Beauty" is a screenplay that reads likee a Grisham novel: impossible to put down, full of surprises and able to reach the beach dwellers as well as those waiting for meetings with their Phd advisor. Alan Ball (who created and was responsible for a LOT of "Six Feet Under") had the luck that this masterpiece of a script fell into the hands of Mr. Sam MEdndes, a theatre director who honors the words more than the studios. (Mr Mendes has directed Sondheim) so that what came out of this screenplay was one of the most brilliant films ever. But I'm not going to talk about the film; so many have. And you're likely to assume that you've seen the film twice or thrice so you have it down. The screenplay is a different experience; not a thing is left for us to ponder we're told that the camera is doing what it's doing so we miss nothing. We see that there are only two people who have discovered the true meaning of beauty and life and that subsequently they are the most vulberable. Yes, this is merely my opinion. Make your own opinion, but do a search for this screen play and place a bid. I got it for a fifteenth of it's value and it's not fair to Mr. Ball who deserves more than an Oscar and Emmy (which he has) for this work. As for Sam Mendes, keep doing the work of Alan Ball; try to hook up with Aaron Sorkin who is just as good: the two of you are perfect for bringing "Follies" to film. And don't fall for the concept of moving it to a studio destruction: It HAS to remain about the death of musical form between the two wars-unless you plan to eulogize the MGM movie musical-but the music won't work. Do it as Goldman wrote it, get Sorkin to make it work on sceen and go down in history. I'll just wait and watch. Eat 'em up, folks.Read full review
