I love British history. Greggory adds enough color to her historical novels to make the interesting British history hard to put down and walk away from. This book has so much cloak and dagger mystery and exceptional character descriptions that I actually felt, at times, that I was there. Would like to see this one on the big screen. "The Other Bolyn Girl" was such a hit I can't imagine Hollywood not grabbing this one for their next "Royal" romp. I got a bit bored with "Bess" one of the lead characters and her constant reminders of her 3 deceased husbands and her constant reminders of how she earned and often stole her fortune and how she married into it. The characters were beautifully developed but I got Bess's character after about the 2nd or 3rd mention of her and her many houses. All-in-all, it is an excellent book, well written and well worth the short time it will take to read it. Greggory is a smooth writer. She keeps it simple and to the point. You'll love it.Read full review
the Author elaborates to make each story back to life however for me too much fillers which makes the reading drag out using language “laugh out loud” which makes the story of the characters unbelievable especially during that era. Many unanswered questions towards the end it just stops abruptly and I’m still turning pages to see if it’s a mistake. I actually didn’t enjoy these 2 books as much as her Boleyn Girl series. I was very disappointed this time around.

Philippa Gregory has a certain style of writing that brings the historical characters of England to life. She gets inside their heads and lets you know just how they felt, and why they felt that way. Other authors seem to stick to the popular sides of the Tudor story. Gregory is not afraid to take a change and say, "maybe it happened this way...". Even if you've read other works about the Tudor dynasty, you should read her work to get another perspective.
Based on the excellence of Philippa Gregory's previous books dealing with this era, I so looked forward to reading this book. Sad to say I was a bit dissappointed. The diary like style omits much of Mary of Scots life and the circumstances that lead to her confinment with the Shewsberry's. It was interesting to delve into Bess's life and her view of Mary but if the reader knew nothing about Mary of Scots before reading this book....they are still uninformed. The ending seemed a bit hurried and left many unanswered questions.ie What happened to Bothwell? I know but does the reader new to the Tudor Dynasty? If I were pressed I would almost think the book was written by someone other than Ms Gregory.
I'm still reading it, but anything that Philippa Gregory writes is not going to be disappointing! I've read all but 2 of her books so far! Her historical novels on the Tudor years are so interesting and so much fun to read! She makes you really get into the characters.......love her!!
