This book is a great book to introduce yourself, friends or family to the many facets of health. We tend to gravitate towards thinking we are healthy if we just avoid fat, or just avoid carbs- this helps you understand why this is not true. If you are looking for some good pointers and explanations of healthy eating and living, in a very organized book, this is it! I love that it is based on 5 key communities that have shown to be very healthy - you can never go wrong learning about life from those who have lived it well. The author keeps it simple by bringing these people's lives to the table and letting you evaluate along side her what is causing these people to be superiorly healthy. Downsides? There are no 'secrets', but it is good solid advice with helpful explanations. There are no nitty gritty details or extensive scientific back-up, its more of a light read, which I think in this case makes it a positive aspect for the style of this book. This doesn't discount the information in it, its just not a textbook. The author focuses only on the positive aspects of these communities and does not account for any problems they do have, or any 'iff-y' aspects such as promoting grain as much as this book does. But its a better book to spend your money on than any one-sided trendy new health opinion book. Also serves as a great reminder for everything else in life that contributes to health or disease. Fun read, I read through it quickly and refer to it occasionally too. In the end, I highly recommend it for its unique insight! I also enjoyed Omnivore's Dilemma and In Defense of Food.
