I have been watching webcasts for a class at UC Berkeley for a couple years and really enjoyed them. Recently I decided to buy the text for the class and found this popularized version for more casual reading. The material covered in the class is mirrored in this book. It focuses on the most popular theories in physics and how they affect our everyday lives. It provides the average person good insight into the science and technology behind issues such as nuclear nonproliferation, green energy alternatives, and other subjects surrounding global warming. You don't need any background in math or science to enjoy and gain greater understanding in the topics covered in this book. Additionally I have recently bought other books mentioned or recommended in this book. I would also like to mention that Muller uses very simple language in a way that's easy to understand despite the technical nature of the material. It's a fairly easy read and very enjoyable for any science or current events enthusiast. The only downside to this book for me is that it's kind of short. I had hoped too see greater coverage of the topics I saw in the webcasts. I plan to buy the actual required text for the class next. I give this book 10 to the 24 stars.Read full review
Don't let the word "Physics" in the title throw you off, with visions of blackboards full of equations. This book is nothing like that - it is fascinating reading for people with no physics background. I had a hard time putting it down. The author touches on a lot of important subjects that relate to all of us - this isn't a journey into theoretical physics, this is real stuff. I bought copies for three people in my family to read, and I'm having my soon-to-be 7th grader read it now. 5 stars!
I bought this book for my science class and found that I actually like it. I was expecting something dry, and with "physics" in the title I was more than a little apprehensive. Instead I've found this book to be enjoyable to read. The scientific information is presented without any convoluted masses of numbers. Muller also does a good job showing why the topics he addresses are important to consider - whether someone is an average voter or the next president. You don't have to be a scientist to understand this book! I'm actually looking forward to the end of classes so that I have time to read the chapters that are not assigned.
Detailed fundamental information regarding global warning, climate cycles, nuclear energy, nuclear weapons, and space. Excellent non-biased factual primer.
