This book, like Erskine Caldwells "Catcher in the Rye", is an expose of the actual day to day life of an individual. Perhaps since Caldwell's book, this is the one that hits the closest to home, giving a unique view into the twisted psyche of an individual forced to survive in a world where abnormal in society's eyes, is the norm. Where the marriage between a fourteen year old girl and a fifty three year old male is not only accepted, but encouraged, and an affair between a fifteen year old boy and a thirty five year old male is encouraged. There is something to be said for Auto-didactic education, and this book gives the positive as well as the negative aspects of that system. It is an eye opener, and an education to the closed minded individual who believes life follows rules. In this book, Life's rules are made to be broken. The fact that it is fact, instead of fiction, tends to rub some people the wrong way. If it were fiction, it could be laughed off as entertaining. The fact that is is fact, makes it not only entertaining, but insightful. It is disconcerting to laugh at someone elses misfortune, and at the same time difficult not to, in the manner it is presented by the author. I thought it was really funny, whenever I could understand it. It has a lot of references to US culture and, being a foreigner, I realized I missed out on a lot of stuff that most Americans probably find hilarious. Still, it was enjoyable and easy to read. Entertaining.
This book is incredible. It is the most bizarre "life story" of a person that you will EVER read..yet it's all true. TONS of laughter, and even some tears..but WELL WORTH READING. All of Augusten Burrough's books are amazing. EVERY one. Read this one lst before reading his other books, as this sets the stage for the other books following it..tho' they are not "sequels" by nature. I highly recommend this book, and I would follow the book with the movie. The movie is one of the only movies I have seen that seems to truly follow a book.
Pros: Hilarious, poignant, unexpected plot twists Cons: Sexually explicit, vulgarity, child abuse Possibly the funniest book I have ever read. I could not stop reading this book; probably read the whole thing in 4 hours. It was so odd and so compelling, I kept waiting for the next strange twist is this bizarre memoir. So unusual, it is hard to believe it is true. I knew that the movie was coming out soon, so I wanted to read it before I saw it. I am totally looking forward to seeing Annette Benning in the role of the mother. This is not for the faint of heart; there are some explicit scenes, so be prepared.
The title hooked me, Burrough's plot and characterization kept me. I had to keep reminding myself that this is a non-fiction book. Burroughs' narrative is electrifying, his recollections scintillating, and his characters brilliant. I couldn't put the book down. A word of caution is in order: If you are offended by descriptive homosexual acts or have problems with disfuctionality within the family, do NOT buy this book. Running with Scissors is a quick, entertaining read which I highly recommend.
