This one is from the first Gambit mini-series, and is a solo adventure starring ‘The Ragin’ Cajun!’ himself! Seriously though, this is an interesting look at Gambit’s past, introducing us to a whole new level of intrigue and drama in the Marvel universe. Within the confines of this four issue limited series, we are introduced to a whole new slate of heroes, villains, allies and enemies – many of whom went on to feature in future Gambit comics, other X-books, and even into the wider continuity. The artwork, coloring, lettering, etc. in this one features a gritty, murky, impressionistic style that I didn’t care for, at first look. Looking at this comic book again, I have to say that the overall art direction in this one fit the story perfectly. To this day, it is a very original and distinctive look. As far as the storytelling goes, I pretty much enjoyed, well, at least most of it. The New Orleans imagery, the mythology of the Assassin and Thieves’ guilds, the ‘star crossed lovers’ plot between Gambit and Bella Donna; IT’S ALL GOOD! Basically, while this series may not have been as action-packed and sophisticated as one of the ‘team’ X-books, the story was captivating, the characters were interesting, and the art is one-of-a-kind.
