I love, love this movie. My husband has hundreds of movies & DVD's, but I think this is the only one I ever actually bought for myself. The movie is based on the storyline of classic 1940 movie Shop Around the Corner. Shop around the Corner starred Margaret Sullivan & Jimmy Stewart. The "computer" age couple are Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks. They have an online chatting relationship and end up falling in love over the internet. The trouble is in the "real world" they are actually enemies. Meg Ryan plays Kathleen Kelly owner of a small children's book store. She has inherited the store from her beloved mother. She believes in personal customer service, knows her shoppers by name, has children's story hours etc. Jean Stapleton plays a good part as one of Kelly's employees. Tom Hanks plays Joe Fox, owner of the big chain bookstore. He is opening a giant store right around the corner from Kelly's quaint little shop and has no concern for her business. Sadly the big guy eventually puts her out of business. People seem to be more concerned with a better price than good customer relations. Of course in the end they meet & fall in love, how else would a love story end! Men might not like this movie too much but you gals will. I watch it if I feel a little down & it lifts my spirits. Meg & Tom make a cute couple! Hope you enjoy it too!Read full review
Excellent movie about two people who are brought together in New York City by the collision of two similar business. Of course, this is all put into prospective by the invention of email, and those famous three words . . . YOU'VE GOT MAIL! Unknown to one another, Hanks, who owns a chain of discount book stores, and Ryan, who owns a tiny, old fashioned, children's book store that has been in business for generations, become cyberpals. When his new "Megastore" puts her small shop out of business, she takes it personal in every way. He is the enemy! To him, it is just business, not personal. Their email relationship continues, but she has no idea that her friend is her rival and enemy. He is falling in love with her, but there is no way for it to ever work. Through a series of interactions and meetings, they become just friends, but they both have a need for more, but just can't get there. After all, he is the enemy, and he put her out of business! Eventually, he is able to arrange a meeting with her and her "mystery friend" where she learns the truth and they fall in love. This is what everybody calls a "Chic Movie", but it is nicely done and very touching. A most enjoyable film.Read full review
This movie i love to death. It has two very good actors to start out. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks have great chemistry together. All you internet people out there who go to chat rooms will love this one. These two couple meet in a chat room on Meg Ryans 30th birthday. They agree to be online buddies but they don't give out any specifics. She owns a book store called shop around the corner. Well little does she know that the man she is talking to is also the man who is opening his own book store called fox books which is putting her out of buisness. Well eventually after chatting with him for a long while like months and months she falls in love with him. I'm not going to say no more you will have to watch this movie yourself to find out what happens. Make sure you have a box of kleenex though cause your gonna need it for this one. So be careful who you chat with and always make sure that u arn't enemie in the real world lol.Read full review
I have been wanting a copy of this movie and found it at a great price at eBay. It came in a shipping envelope that was padded. The case was seal wrapped and in great condition. The dvd plays great with absolutely no problems at all. I am very pleased with condition of case & dvd. Oh, and it came a whole day early.

This is a great romantic comedy, in which Tom Hanks plays alongside Meg Ryan. This movie reminds me of Sleepless in Seattle, where they also play, only in this movie, they are older and have more mature roles. Their co-stars are great, as well. We get behind the scene view of two people who meet online. Only they end up owning competitive bookstores. In real life, they are sensitive and compassionate, but they maintain a formal attitude at work. In the end, they are a great match, and have fun hanging out. The ending is surprising. Best watched when cuddling with a book in front of the TV.
