This club hits the ball 35 - 40 yards farther than my old driver. However the consistency is not as good. The club head is very light and is hard to tell where it is in mid swing. I assume this is just something one has to get used to over time. When the moment of impact is perfect however this club is very long and I was reaching 290 off the tee easily. On the other hand if it is not perfect, 250 yards is a long way to be searching for a golf ball hit offline. The club head has a very nice appearance at address, the cover could have been designed better (a little difficult to stretch over the huge head), over all I would say this club is an 8 out of 10.
Each and every manufacturer promises more distance. Let's face it; it is their greatest sales pitch. What golfer doesn't want to go long? (when was the last time you heard any golfer say "I have to get a new driver. I am hitting mine WAY too long right now.") Taylor Made is no different in this aspect. They promise more distance along with the other important factors in golf; accuracy and consistency. And so the question is does TM deliver? The answer is a resounding YES! To start the 2009 Burner Driver is now affordable. Whereas at one time, only a year ago or so, these drivers were upwards of $400, they can now be purchased for well under $100 in great condition. Even new ones are barely over $100, a bargain considering the timeless design of this driver and its potential to add distance to the drive. So, to begin this review in earnest, a little background information is in order. There is plenty of information available on the Internet regarding drivers. After reading just about every review online it came down to two drivers for me; the TM Burner 2009 and the Ping G-10. Both are now one year old which makes them extremely affordable while at the same time bringing new technological advantages when compared to drivers made only two or three years ago. And so began the test on the range. Both drivers provide long penetrating ball flights. Both have a nice solid sound at impact. And both drivers add distance; about 10 yards from my results versus my older Cleveland HiBore. But what makes the TM different is its consistency. Whereas the Ping found the target line 6 of 10 times with an average distance for me of 244 yards of carry, the TM was online 8 of 10 times with 242 yards of carry. So, yes the Ping was longer but the TM was almost as long but percentage wise was significantly more accurate for me. (20% more accurate to be exact) Now, to give a little more detail on my test, I normally hit a draw. With my Cleveland I average 233 yards of carry and have about 10 yards of additional roll. Both the Ping and the TM added about 20 yards to their carry even though the ball went higher. The Ping simply had a little more draw in the mix which led to less target line and more roughs. The TM started less to the right, drew back onto target, stayed on target, and ended on target. It was for this reason that I selected the TM when compared to its only comparison based on my research. And I am in no way disappointed in the results. The Summary of the Taylor Made 2009 Burner Driver: Pros: Current cost Affordable technology Accuracy Distance Confidence at address Light weight Cons: Longer shaft takes some getting used to Not quite as long as the Ping Cannot feel the position of the head because of light weight Takes some getting used to regarding the noise a solid strike makes Have to tee ball higher to position it at the TM sweet spot when compared to old driver Overall I would urge that you test drive both the Ping and the TM. See the results for yourself. No, it will not add 50 yards. It might not add but 10 to 15. But it will also help with consistency. Longer and straighter....that should be the real goal.Read full review
As a 13 handicap I found good distance and control with this driver. Having never used a TaylorMade driver before I was interested in the feel, distance and control. This driver is a 9.5 degree with a stiff shaft. I have been using a Callaway 8.5 degree also with a stiff shaft. It took me about 20 balls to dial in the driver when I first hit it and noticed imediately the difference in loft. The drives were flying noticeably higher. Any bad swings and the loss of distance was considerable. The 8.5 is more forgiving. The driver feels so good at impact though I think I will look for a 8.5 in this model or the R9 and then I will have a keeper.
The Balance is great with this drive the combination of Shaft to Club head is about Perfect. The only Change I made was a new Winn over sized wrapped Grip it has such an excellent feel it makes the Club feel more perfect on off center hits. The Tour model gives you great distance off the Tee the Ball just explodes off the face I picked up three miles per hour club head speed and maybe twelve yards more distance than my Callaway I-Mix driver. This is a good driver for all handy caps I play to a 4 handy cap and this does a great job on off center hits and that has saved me strokes. This is a good investment for your Game. The TaylorMade Burner has become my choice of clubs after trying many other brands. The past 4 months I have purchased a full set of TaylorMade clubs including Fairway drivers, Rescues, TaylorMade Balls and a TaylorMade bag all from Ebay. Pricing these clubs at local Sporting stores I figure that I have saved several hundreds of dollars by using Ebay. Since purchasing these clubs and accessories on average I have dropped 5 strokes off my previous scores. They are an excellent quality club that is easier to stroke through the ball with more accuracy. Living close to Salt Lake City, Ut. I live close to hundreds of stores from which I am able to find almost anything I am looking for. After checking Ebay I am almost always able to find items cheaper and of the same quality and delivered to my door step. I have over 500 purchases on Ebay and will continue to have many more. Ebay is a great place to find the unfindable. BigNParker.Read full review
