Many people I've encountered, when hearing the name 'Miami Vice', smile with a bit of irony. It seems many remember the show only for its pastel colors, flashy cinematography and basically because its aesthetic defined a decade many people still see as kitsch. Then upon closer look, some of those people have come to realize that the show wasn't all style and no substance. The show redefined television in many very important aspects; it introduced the 'antihero' as prominent figure of authority. Detectives Sonny Crockett (Don Johnson) and Ricardo Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas) were as politically incorrect as they came, yet they always did the right thing and upheld the law. The show introduced heroes with flaws, made them human, vulnerable, and above all; likeable. Johnson and Thomas inhabited their characters like a hand does a glove. One believed they were Crockett and Tubbs, and the chemistry between them sent sparks. Another groundbreaking aspect of the show was its use of cinematography and music. Excecutive producer Michael Mann, an obsessive artist, conceived the show not as television episodes, but as mini films that used atmosphere as a main character. One could watch the show and feel they were IN the Ferrari with Crockett and Tubbs, not just watching from our comfortable living rooms. The first 2 seasons I purchased on DVD from Ebay have given me some of the happiest hours in the last couple of months. I was always a fan of the show, but was too young to fully grasp its impact then. I'm so thankful I can have the opportunity to re-live the experience with more educated eyes...not to mention the DVDs have extras, are digitally remastered, and come in greatly designed packaging. I can't wait for season 3 to come out, and I will be one of the first ones to bid on it on Ebay!Read full review
