The problem with this book is that Carlos Marcello and the Mafia or the Mob or the Outfit or the Syndicate or however you choose to refer to them were only marginally involved in the assassination and not the principals involved in the plotting and the cover-up. To suggest that they and they alone plotted and killed JFK is almost as absurd as believing that Lee Harvey Oswald did it by himself with his damaged Mannlicher-Carcano. The cover-up came from too high and was too powerful to be anything less than the highest level of government, for example, the White House, or FBI, or CIA to just name a few guilty parties. There is plenty of evidence to suggest that organized crime elements aided and participated in the assassination and the cover-up, and Mr. Davis, a cousin of Jackie Kennedy and who once met Lucky Luciano, has done a fine job of narrating the Dallas and New Orleans involvement under the control of Carlos Marcello. This is a fascinating book and will tell you a great deal about the history of Oswald and Marcello and the New Orleans Mafia and David Ferrie. It's one of the best one volume introductions to the murky world of the JFK assassination. To believe that the Mob acted as consultants and technicians and mop-up men is completely believable but to posit as Davis and Blakey and others that organized crime alone pulled off the crime of the century and has gone unpunished is a bit incredible. They ignore the stonewalling and destruction of evidence at the highest level. The sealing of the records. The tampering with the autopsy and destruction of the evidence and records. The immediate standing down of any local investigation by the new Commander-in-Chief. It is highly doubtful, even with LBJ's criminal credentials, that a Mafia cover-up at that high a level could have been achieved. By all means read this book as it has a lot of useful information but it's only the beginning as it raises more questions than it answers, much like everything else in the JFK assassination. It's not evidence but I feel I should put it in. I knew a woman whose mother worked for Marcello in his headquarters motel, the Town and Country on Airport Blvd. if I remember correctly. She said that Marcello didn't talk about the assassination but whenever it was brought up he would get a big smirk and it was unspoken but understood that he had JFK killed. I think he just hated him and wanted the credit.Read full review
My father in law gave me a copy of this book many years ago. Combine the knowledge contained in this book and the recent news that the Manhattan DA's office is opening an investigation of New York Post's investigative reporter, Dorthy Kilgallen's mysterious death and you will come away convinced! She was getting close to solving this mystery, much too close and it cost her life! It appears that the Warren Commission was intimidated by the underworld and did a very poor investigation of this tragedy. The book is very well written and should be read by anyone interested in this event. The apparent murder of Dorthy Kilgallen and this book were totally independent and bring the reader to the same conclusion, I hope this investigation isn't buried but brought yo a conclusion! There are probably people alive today who were connected to this event and should be investigated.Read full review

Although Davis goes too far in attributing the assassinations to the Mafia, he exposes the Mafia connections to Hoover and to the out-of-control elements of the CIA , Big Oil, anti-Catholics and anti-Cubans, to name but a few of the forces ranged against Kennedy. It's the most important book on the Mafia from a National Archivist who had access to what was important, with a scholarly interest in accuracy and enough integrity to tell the truth. One of the basic textbooks for the sincere student of the case, written for intelligent readers.
