I bought this Atlas of the Civil War because it was recommended as a companion to U.S. Grant's Memoirs, the annotated edition, by one reviewer. I didn't realize how large this book is: 13.5 inches by 16.5 inches by 1.6 inches and almost 12 lbs. It's huge and won't fit on a normal-size book shelf. But having become accustomed to it being hugely oversized, I find it interesting and useful. Other reviewers have complained about its organization. I'm still working through its indexes, which cross-reference the maps to the original military volumes from which this book is compiled. That point should be kept in mind. This is not a book to read. It is strictly a reference. As such it is superb. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 only because of its size, which makes it difficult to use. It is about twice the size of even a large coffee table book. But for the price it's a real bargain.Read full review

Over a period of time, I have become somewhat a student of the American Civil War and Reconstruction. I purchased this atlas to supplement my readings about the Civil War, and especially the various campaigns and battles that occurred. This item was favorably priced compared to other works of a similar nature. It was received quickly and in good condition. I find it to be very thorough, addressing practically every campaign and battle of note. It is interesting to me to peruse this work independently of other books and works; however, its best use is probably as a reference to illustrate and elucidate the many narrative works on the Civil War. Without appropriate maps, it is virtually impossible to understand narrative descriptions of troop movements and positions. Indeed, much the same applies with respect to geographic locations or fixtures, such as railroads and river crossings, many of which not longer appear on modern maps. Also, given the credentials of the parties who prepared and assembled this work, one can feel reasonably certain that it is historically accurate and reliable--qualities not necessarily found in all of the myriad works on the Civil War. Perhaps the greatest difficulty in the use of this work is its sheer size. In a word, it is large and heavy, being approximately 17" tall, nearly 14" from spine to front edge, and 2" thick. I estimate its weight to be more than 5 pounds. It does not fit in standard bookshelves, and as a practical matter, must be laid on a table or similar surface for use. Of course, this large size gives the user the benefit of large size illustrations and maps without having to resort to annoying fold-out maps or multiple piece-meal views. This work is probably employed more often in libraries than in individual homes and collections. However, it may very well be the best reference work existing for the purpose for which it was prepared.Read full review
