This book is a great way to help you write your own life story to leave for generations to come - even if you think they won't want to know about you! I'm the family historian and I have learned that later generations always want to know about the past. This book makes it simple with simple questions to get you started and in-depth questions to keep you going. It is well written and well organized. There are some similar books out there usually intended speciffically for mothers or fathers, etc., but none come close to this one in helping to pull out your real life experiences. Another use I found for this book as the family historian was very exciting. I use it to interview older generations who are reluctant to record their own lives or are too frail to do it themselves. I have also used it to get small family groups talking about family history. One comment, though, if you are using the book to record other people's history, use a tape recorder as well as paper and pen!! This book will have the information coming fast and furious and that's the only way you'll be able to keep up!! Bob Greene has a way with the subject of family and his collaboration with D. G. Fulford is absolutely wonderful. You won't regret buying this book for yourself to record your own life, to help you record someone else's life, or as a gift for someone special.Read full review
This is a great book for anyone wishing to leave family members some memories of their lives. It includes over 200 pages of questions to get you started. The questions range from basic information like "What did you do for a living and why did you choose that career?" to more in-depth questions like "Are there things about your life that you are proud of or that you regret?" Overall, it provides a non-intimidating way to help you get started recording some of your memories so your children or some future family members will have a better understanding of who you were. I bought the book to supplement the kinds of topics we are addressing in my memoir writing class, which I am taking because I know almost nothing about the generation before me and that feels like a terrible loss. I want to leave a record of our generation for the generations which follow us. You can't assume that even your own children know about your early life, your loves, your accomplishment, or your challenges. They really will be interested in anything you leave behind.Read full review
I received this book as a gift in 1998 from a dear school classmate and I wanted to write my story for my family, but this is the time that my mother went into the hospital with a heart attack. It was Christmas day. I gave my mother the book and told her to write whenever she felt up to it. I forgot about the book until my mother passed away in 2003 and then after a year I went through some of her books and found this book. She had written all of her life history and I read this with tears in my eyes. At the end of the book she wrote..."I wonder if anyone will ever read this" I did.....and LOVED it!!!! I then wanted to purchase another copy and start writing my history......I bid on the book on EBAY and won the book and it arrived in FABULOUS condition.....I am now writing my history for my children and their children. Thank you for making this possible...... EBAY is WONDERFUL!!!!!!!! Sincerely... Nancy Mount nansbug@aol.comRead full review
