Orig. Matthew Brady Cdv Robert E. Lee, Son & Col. Walter Taylor For SaleFor sale is an original Matthew Brady photographic cdv of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, his son, General George Washington Custis Lee, and his assistant, Colonel Walter Taylor.
Albumen silver photograph measures approximately 2.25 x 3.5 inches, CDV size slightly larger. There are some splotches if discoloration and a little silver mirroring around the extreme edges. Otherwise, photograph looks great with superb clarity. CDV has a gilt border around the photograph and gilt lettering below the image which reads "Entered according to Act of Congress by M.B. Brady & Co. in the year 1865 in the Clerks Office of the District of Columbia." Back has a hand-written description of the sitters and Brady's studio stamp.
This scarce cdv comes from a photo album owned by the prominent Goldsborough Family of Maryland, who fought for the Confederates during the war. One of the family members was Charles Goldsborough, who was married to Admiral Franklin Buchanan, the only full Admiral in the Confederacy. Addendum: I have found another example of this same CDV which has the same "splotchy" effect. It appears that this is how this CDV was produced by Brady's studio, and that said effect is original to the photograph.Â
