Pflueger Surprise Minnow:
this surprise minnow is one of 5 minnows that were given to me in the early 1970's from a friend of mine whose grandfather was an independent salesman.his grandfather sold sporting goods including pflugeher, heddon and Shakespeare fishing lures.these lures have never been in the water and have noscratches or major flaws on them.the lure shown in this listing has one age related stress crack on the belly of the lure which I supplied a picture of. it
in researching this lure out I found that it was produced in 1915-1917 time period. the original patent papers for this lure specified empty eye sockets instead of glass eyes.i t was thought that when this lure was retrieved trough the water that the eye sockets would trap air and that when the lure was stopped in a horizontal position the sockets would release the air as tiny bubbles giving the lure the appearance ofexhaling in a lifelike manner.glass eyes were not added to this lure until 1920.i am also selling the original box that the lure came in.later boxes had a four digit color number stamped on them as well as a descriptive spelling of the color ie "green crackleback"stamped under the sizenumber.this box was produced prior to addind the color descriptions.the patent as applied for in 1913 and it is believed this lure shich is greenback crackle was actually one of the first surprise minnows produced
