Rare Postal Telegraph Key & Skirrow Sounder Kob Bunnell Railroad Western Union:
The above title and 's condition statement (if any) are not part of the seller's description. Rely only on the description which follows below.
This KOB set has the unusual vertical lever Skirrow sounder, as used by the Postal Telegraph Company. Postal was a major competitor of the W.U. Telegraph Company in the early 1900s. This would have been used in a Postal office; also railroad station and depot operators often doubled as Postal or WU operators, sending, receiving and delivering telegrams between their station agent duties.
All of the instrument parts (except for the key lever and sounder armature) appear to be solid brass.
The key is the "Bunnell S" type as stamped on the main lever; stamped on the base is J.H. Bunnell, New York USA."
There are no marks on the sounder but it is the Skirrow patent of December 10, 1901 type. It has a gear-driven coil adjustment which moves the coils toward or away from the lever armature. Stamped into the wood base between the wire terminals is "200" (ohms of the coils in series).
This scarce set is mechanically complete and original, right down to the three brass feet under the base. All of the adjustments and movements work and are not frozen. It is an excellent candidate for restoration. Small crack in one coil cover. The coil wires are broken where they enter the coils; the wood base is delaminating and would be replaced in a restoration.
This is from a railroad collection of telegraph items and is offered as shown, as is for restoration.
