Rare Named Type B-10 Usaaf Ww2 Navigators 449th Bomb Group Flying Horsemen B-24 For Sale
A rare opportunity to acquire a named and documented and researched B-10 flying jacked belonging to Lt Richard (Dick) Downey lead B-24 bombadier on "Stardust" on Retring crew 449th Bomber Group 718th Squadron.flew operations against Ploesti Rumanian oilfields that were highly daring and helped end the war with Germany that much sooner. Dick Downey was the founder and secretary of the 449th Flying horseman association and remained so until his death in 2002. The B-10 flight jacket has no modifications. The original leather name tag "R Downey" remains in original location. There is the painted squadron crest in yellow of the 449th Flying Pegasus holding bomb below the name tag. One can see where a leather squadron patch was later machine stitched over the painted insigia and later removed. Leather Lt rank insignia were applied to epaulets and later removed. I owned Downey's painted A-2 which sold here for $3000. This jacket is a size 40 and is made by the Stag Coat company under contract to the USAAF. The original Conmar zipper with leather pull is in place and functions properly. The fur collar is in nice condition and over all the jacket has no rips or holes. The waistband is all original and in nice condition. The cuffs have gone to wear and time. Included is Downey's original annotated copy of the book Tucson to Grottaglie "and this is our story" a History of the 449th Bomb group. The book is signed by major General Frank Elliot and squadron CO Jack Randolph. The book is full of personal inscriptions etc...also included many reunion programs, menus bumper sticker and a Ballantine's book on the Ploesti Oil Strike.
