FYI:Cunard Line mortgaged their 1965 fleet to help finance the completion of the new super liner.
Her keel was laid on June 5, 1965, on the same slipway in Scotland that once housed
theQueen Mary(1) during her 1934 construction.TheQueen Elizabeth II,like theQueen Mary,
did not get a name until the day of her launch. She was simply known as "John Brown number 736".
Launched onSeptember 20, 1967, but due to early problems and extended trials,
the 65,863 grtQE2finally entered service in May 1969.
in Cunard's 168-year history.
On June 18, 2007 Cunard/Carnival Cruise Line announced the sale ofQueen Elizabeth 2for US$100 million,
to Dubai World (a wholly owned company of the Government of Dubai).
Opening 2009, the famous liner will be berthed at a specially-constructed pier as a luxury floating hotel,
retail and entertainment destination at The Palm Jumeirah, the world's largest man-made island.
Representatives saidQE2’s”refurbishment will aim to recreateQE2'soriginal interior decor and fittings
and will also include a museum celebrating the rich history of the ship."
The ship’s casino will be removed, due to no gambling laws in Dubai.
The vessel was delivered toDubaiin November 2008.
But due to the economy plans for the conversion have been put on hold.
Since 2009 there have been numerous plans and ideas torevitalizethe ship.
Even scrapping her has been on the table.
In early 2015,there was been renewed interest to bring her back to the UK.
In March 2018 the ship was towed from Port Rashid to the nearby Dubai Drydocks World by a fleet of tugs,
as she is no longer able to move under her own power
(this was the first time she moved in 3 years).
According to reports on social media she has been dry-docked
as part of her conversion into a floating hotel.
