Stunning Antique Chinese Carved Wood Jade Table Screen Scolar's Folding Screen For Sale
This is a really lovely and beautifully crafted Antique Chinese screen. It has three hinged panels and so the side panels fold as it stands, it'snot a typical folding screen, nor is it a typical table screen, i have never seen one like this - very unusual.
It is made up of finely carved wooden fret work inlaid with seven circular disks of hard stone which i believe to be Jade. These are thinly cut so that the light shines through them, and they are also pierced and etched in a pattern of birds and flowers.
The wood is carved in a very detailed scene with willow trees, fir trees and another type of tree so it's like a forest with houses and buildings nestled among the foliage. There are four figures on the main panel, an old man in flowing robes, a woman, an adolescent boy, and a fourth man seated on the ground who may be a beggar. This scene is also interlocked with rolling cloud.
I don't know what sort of wood it is but it is close grained and quite hard as the carving is full of detail. The carving style is much like that found on brush pots of the late 19th century. I would say this piece dates from between 1890 and 1920.
The back is plain and it has the four original hinges which are all sturdy and in good order. IT stands up very well and is not wobbly, The wood has a slight reddish tint and may well be Mahogany, it would look even more lovely with a light polish of wax to really bring out it's three dimensional aspect. It also looks amazing by a window with the sun streaming in from behind and through the green stone disks.
it measures a shade under 16 inches in length when laid flat and is 12 inches high at the highest point.
It is quite heavy for the size so international buyers please be aware that it could be around 30 or so pounds depending on which country. please contact me if you would like a precise price for international postage, I only charge the real cost.
