vintage paper mache TRINKET BOX hand made M. Qasim & Bro. Dalgate Srinagar Kashmir India
Lovely vintage paper-mache trinket box. Features a lush green floral design with handpainted gold highlights. Not sure what Indian flower / plant this is, some look like 5 petal roses other look more cabbage like. Handmade in Kashmir, India by M. Qasim & Brothers. This looks like an old box, I would guess 1950s to 1960s. Pretty good condition with slight varnish losses on the top edge (see photos). Measures 1 1/4" tall by 2 3/4" in diameter.
Papier-mâché (French for "chewed paper", alternatively, paper-mache) is a composite material consisting of paper pieces or pulp, sometimes reinforced with textiles, bound with an adhesive, such as glue, starch, or wallpaper paste. In Persia and Kashmir, papier-mâché has been used to manufacture small painted boxes, trays, étagères and cases. In Japan and India, papier-mâché was used to add decorative elements to armor and shields. Historically, Kashmir became known worldwide when Cashmere wool was exported to other regions and nations. Kashmiris are well adept at knitting and making Pashmina shawls, silk carpets, rugs, kurtas, and pottery. Saffron, Srinagar is known for its silver-work, papier mache, wood-carving, and the weaving of silk.
