Vtg 1930's 4-color Rottgames Mahjong Set Bakelite Catalin Coin Bank Mah Jong:
You are viewing a beautiful vintage Rottgames 4-color Mahjong set dating to the 1930's-early 40's. There are 144 tiles, plus 2 blanks. The blanks show signs of wear, as they were set loose in the box - the other playing tiles are all in excellent condition, and show minor, if any, signs of use - the colors are still bright in the intricate designs, one of which is a peacock, which I understand is one of the more sought after sets. I have taken a photo of both sides, and you can see that the colors are evenly matched.
The 5 green catalin racks are all in good condition - no chips or cracks, although the tarnished brass needs polishing. Each rack has the original sticker on the underside (I have shown one rack upside down with the sticker). There is also a 'kitty dish' with four catalin wells to hold coins, with space for the dice in the center. The wood shows some wear, but otherwise very good condition - it has the Rottgames sticker on the back. Also in the set is a green bakelite/catalin coin holder with the original box - I had to discard the plastic coins as they had totally broken down and disintegrated.
An original cleaning cloth is also included, as well as a rules booklet (That's It) dated 1939 -1940 which is the fourth revised edition by Dorothy S. Meyerson. There is also an interesting 10-page price guide pamphlet with descriptions of the various sets and prices for individual mahjong items - the first 2 pages of this pamphlet are missing. The original owner seems to have been from Memphis - there is a set of playing rules from the Memphis Country Club and a few hand written notes.
The zippered case does have issues - it is covered in faux alligator 'leatherette' and shows signs of wear, and the spine back is broken, but not separated, and the handle is missing. The zipper does close properly - the elastic holding the 'kitty dish' and paperwork is loose. I think the case can be rehabilitated - the interior is in pretty good condition - the brown velour(?) behind the elastic is in good condition - no holes - and it does not have a nasty odor. All in all, I think the set is quite excellent.
