A vintage Muggsy Dog cookie jar marked Terrace Ceramics USA 4256 on the bottom.Research indicates that thiscookie jar,wasmade usingthe original Shawnee molds, after Shawnee Pottery closed in 1961 and Terrace Ceramics ended up with them. (see story below).Terrace Muggsy\'s are hard to find.

***\"... Research indicatesfrom the Collectors Guide toShawnee pottery book & other sources...that the Shawnee Pottery Company ceased operations in 1961 after many successful years. The molds for the figural cookie jars (Muggsy, Winnie, Smiley) of the Post Warperiod weresold to a company known as Terrace Ceramics. Terrace produced the cookie jars either void of excess color ordecoration or with much less decoration...\"

Although this jarwas not madedirectly by Shawnee Potteryit was made using their mold and nowhas become a collectible in itself, after all these years & harder to find. The cold paint on these jars was simple and minimal....matte white with pastel & black cold paint face, the scarf was not painted.This is guaranteed as an older jar & not a recent foreign reproduction etc. Heavy for the size.

Condition: Matte low sheen glaze has someoverall random grayishrub marks from being wrapped in newspaper in storage. Iwiped with a dampcloth,but this may be permanent since matte glazes are susceptibleto rubs. Adds to the patina and charm. The white glaze flows from lighter to darker coverage as shown. The cold paint looks very good, asmall spot of paint missing tothe black nose. Pastel pinks & brown accents look good, swipe of brown in the back to accent a collar. There is no indication that the scarf & bow around the face were ever painted. No chips, cracks or hairlines. Inside the jar has some light yellowed staining. Wonderful expression and style.

Measures approximately 12inches tall to the top of the highest ear.

Wonderful find if you want to add the unusual to your collection or want a Muggsy cookie jar you can really use and enjoy...(rather than display only). Lots of photos in bright lightfor your review of style, name, condition and wear.
