Garden Gnome Elf Leprechaun Art Bookends Pompeian Bronze Clad, Orig, Paint, 1920:
One of my favorites. This is the only one of these I've ever seen.Garden gnomes in full figure. Reading, no less. Great detail in their faces, their little gnome clothes, the hobnails in their boots. All in color. And just to be clear, these truly were intended to be bookends; I am not simply repurposing 2 stand-alone figurines. See my last photo.Bronze-clad, a manufacturing technique whereby a skin of bronze was made to adhere to a plaster form through the process of electro-plating. A handful of companies used this method in the early 1900s to make decorative household objects that had the look, feel and heft of solid bronze pieces yet still were affordable by the middle class. One of those companies was Pompeian Bronze, operating in NYC in the '20s. No maker's mark (there would have been foil labels on the bottoms) but these are Pompeian colors.Condition is fantastic. Absolutely no damage - no breaks in cladding, no dents, nothing mashed. Paint is original, the white of the book pages has flaked off but the rest mostly is intact. Both pieces sit flat and stable.5 3/4 inches tall; 3 3/4 inches wide; 4 1/2 inches from front of boot to back (the book extends another half-inch past the plane of the boot). And weighing 2 pounds EACH PIECE.Perfect gift for the gardener or Travelocity customer in your family. You may never see another of these; and certainly not in this fine condition.US shipping only. USPS priority. I pack with care.
