A Young Sitting Bull
(As he would have appeared at the Battle of the Little Bighorn).Circa 1891-1923 Gilded Age Humidor
(ChiefSitting Bull was scalpedin 1890).
Lifesize, stands 17" tall. His patriotic hair braids are circusy, most certainly connecting him to Buffalo Bill Cody and the Sitting Bull line of Tobacco products. We are attributing the carving to Samuel A. Robb of New YorkCity who is bestknown for hiscigar store indian, trade figure and circus carvings. The laminatedwood suggests it was carved from the mast of atallship.Original paint, as it left the artist's studio. The remarkable condition suggests it came out of a private collection and was neverpubliclydisplayed in a Store.
While strictly circumstantial, everything points to this humidor as coming from The Estate ofJames Buchanan Duke (1856-1925), the third richest man in the World andfounder of theDow Jones Industrial Average. It was Duke's"American Tobacco Company" who created & marketed the Sitting Bull and Col. Cody brands.
In the year 1890 Duke took control of virtuallyevery Tobacco company in America and (because of the scalping) we believe this bust was carved sometime after December of 1890.So, when this bust was carved, between 1891 and 1923,Duke owned all Tobacco brands, including his hugely successful"Sitting Bull" brand.Gilded Age mansion scale. If not Duke, who?
