      ARMENIAN MANUSCRIPTS& MINIATURE ART

One of the most precious treasures of the Armenian nation isthe collection of ancient manuscripts and majority of them are preserved in Matenadaran(Yerevan), the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, named after Mesrop Mashtots, the creator of the Armenian Alphabet.

The art of making Armenian manuscripts has ancienttraditions; the manuscripts are unique and are of great esthetic value.

      CILICIAN SCHOOL OFMINIATURES

Formed in the 12th century. Included writing houses of Hromkla,Drazark, Skeram, Mlich monastery, Akner, Grner. Acted until 1380's Cilicianschool became famous in the 12-14 centuries. Notable artists and miniaturists:Toros Roslin, Sarkis Pitsak, Grigor Mlichetsi, Grigor Pitsak, Vardan,Kostandin, Hovhannes, Kirakos, Stepanos and others. Armenian illuminatedmanuscripts form a separate tradition, related to other forms of MedievalArmenian art. The earliest surviving examples date from the Golden Age ofArmenian art and literature in the 5th century. Early Armenian Illuminatedmanuscripts are remarkable for their festive designs to the Armenian culture;they make one feel the power of art and the universality of its language. Thegreatest Armenian miniaturist, Toros Roslin, lived in the 13th century.

      Toros Roslin

This trend of realism was asserted with the coming of TorosRoslin, (disciple of a man named Kirakos who was his immediate predecessor, hisolder contemporary and probably his master). Few of his biographical detailsare known, the same is true for other painters of this period. According to thecolophons from 1250 to 1260 AD, he worked in Hromgla. He was considered themost prominent miniaturist of the scriptorium while enjoying the patronage ofthe Catholicos Constantine I. There are currently only seven manuscripts signedby him…

      Cilician miniaturesafter Toros Roslin

When the end of the “classical” period arrived, anothertrend is known as the "Armenian baroque" appeared at the beginning ofthe 1280s. The manuscripts of this period were executed in monasteries locatednear the city of Sis. The Lectionary (Matenadaran, Ms. 979) of 1286 is the mostlavish and richly illustrated manuscript of this period in the history ofArmenian illumination. Commissioned by the Crown Prince (the future Hethum IIto whom also belonged the Gospel of Malatia of Toros Roslin), this manuscriptis adorned with miniatures on almost all of its pages, the number of whichexceeds four hundred. According to Drampian: "The manuscript reflects thenew orientations taken by Cilician painting from the 1280s onwards…

Another Gospel entered the history of the Armenian booksunder the name of the Gospel of the Eight Painters (Ms. 7651). It is one of themost famous Cilician art monuments preserved in the Matenadaran, due to the characterof its illustrations. No full-page thumbnail, but horizontal stripes; a rarityin Armenian illuminated manuscripts, which denotes a Byzantine influence…

      Rumkale

Rumkale (lit. 'Roman Castle'; Armenian: Հռոմկլա, romanized:Hromgla) is a ruined fortress on the Euphrates, located in the province ofGaziantep and 50 km west of Şanlıurfa.

Although Rumkale is sometimes linked with places mentionedin ancient sources, the foundations of the structure can be traced back to theByzantine rule the earliest, when the fortress was the seat of a SyriacOrthodox bishopric. Rumkale evolved into a town when its Armenian civilianpopulation grew in the 11th century. The fortress slipped away from theByzantine rule when Philaretos Brachamios (r. 1071–1087), a Byzantine general ofArmenian origin, usurped control of the region amidst the political turmoilcaused by the Battle of Manzikert in 1071. Rumkale then came under Kogh Vasil, whose adoptive son and successor Vasil Dgha was tortured by Baldwin II ofEdessa and forced to relinquish his lands, including Rumkale, to the Crusaderstates in 1116. Sometime between 1148 and 1150, Catholicos Grigor III Pahlavunipurchased the fortress making it the headquarters of the Armenian ApostolicChurch, although it continued to house Syriac Orthodox and Catholicrepresentatives. The town later became part of the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, and by 1268, became isolated from the rest of the Cilician domains.

      Armenian Cilician period

The castle became then part of the Armenian Kingdom ofCilicia. In the 1170 and 1172, theological conferences exploring a union ofchurches were held at Hromgla between the Armenian Church and the ByzantineChurch with the Syrian Orthox (Jacobite) Church sending observers. In 1179, asynod of 33 Armenian bishops took place in Hromgla came up with a compromiseand sent a profession of faith to Byzantine Emperor Manuel I Komnenos, but hedied in September 1180 before it reached him. From 1203 to 1293, it served asthe residence of the Catholicos of the Armenian Church. The site became animportant center for manuscript production, reaching its artistic peak underthe Catholicos Constantine I who employed Toros Roslin, whose stylistic andiconographic innovations had profound influence on subsequent generations ofArmenian art.

By 1268, Hromgla was isolated from the remainder of theArmenian kingdom of Cilicia and was attacked by a force of Mamluks of Egypt, which destroyed the town while it was unable to conquer the citadel. On 19 May1280, the fortress was besieged by the Mamluk army. Sultan Qalawun (r. 1279–90)demanded the catholicos to relocate to Jerusalem or Cilicia. However, the siegewas unsuccessful.
