Antique 18thC Du Paquier Vienna Tankard Mug Porcelain Porzellan Humpen Wien:
$12499.00

For sale is an extremely rare treat - a small tankard made by Du Paquier around 1725. Claudius Innocentius du Paquier was the founder of Europe's second oldest porcelain maker which he started in 1718. A precursor to the Vienna porcelain factory. His wares are exceedingly rare and owning one of his pieces was always a goal of mine so I was thrilled to find this superb and fun piece recently. The main body is hand painted with some of their very early typical Indianische Blumen style flowers in those superb early colors. The closest ones in this style I could find were from a piece of the 'Stift Klosterneuburg Service' but they were already a bit later than this piece here. There are three large floral arrangements on this tankard as well as two small bugs. The bottom and top edge have a nice trim in their typical iron red color. My favorite part however is what makes this a bit more special. The lid has an armorial / coat of arms on top of it as shown. No idea what family this is from and if anyone out there has an idea I'd love to hear about it. It would be neat to figure that out and fill in a bit more of its history! The mounts are pewter I believe which also points to it being a real early piece since they would otherwise have used silver. The size of the piece is small than a normal tankard to it as either for Vermuthbeer ( Wermutkrügeln ) or for a child I would guess. The piece displays superbly and is in great condition given its age but the bottom terminal of the handle has chipped off and the underside of the tankard has a star crack to it with one of the hairline branches going up into the side and curving to the side as shown. It's stable and won't go anywhere and isn't terrible but it is sadly not a perfect piece anymore. Still a very rare survivor and armorial pieces by them are almost non existent. The piece is unmarked which is normal. The tankard is about 4.125 inches tall not including the thumb piece of the mounts and has a diameter of about 3.625 inches including the mounts around the lid edge. 18th century Austria Austrian Stein Krug DuPaquier If you like my goodies have a look at my other sales for a lot more top maker pieces like KPM , Sevres and so on.
